At the end of this stream of hormones, the adrenal response is to release cortisol, fighting the effects of stress. When a stressor is recognized, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is set in motion. The hormones responsible are norepinephrine and epinephrine (also called adrenaline).
